Come Unto Christ

To come unto Christ, I raise my eyes
In search of him who hears my cries.
As I seek to bind my wounded heart,
With balm of Gilead I do start…

To find a way to increase my faith,
Though in paths of treachery I often stray.
For in my search for true happiness
I often find only selfishness.

Yet my true self does surely try,
To free my soul from deaths’ grip I fly.
Only to find I’ve flown once more
Away from the Savior’s heavenly door.

My problem is you must surely see,
That I wait on the Savior to rescue me.
Try as he might he will never succeed,
While I flounder here in my greed.

For no handle has he to open the way,
But still at my door he knocks each day.
I peer intently to see his face,
Thinking to rely partially upon his grace.

But sorely mistaken am I yet,
In this mortal form I tend to forget,
That the option is mine to open and see,
The Savior and my eternity.

Once more I find myself at a door,
I knock and wait I can’t be sure.
As the door swings open, I shrink to see,
That once again Satan’s opened to me.

Will I ever learn the lessons the Savior taught?
Will I understand him without thought?
No, my heart and path must surely turn,
If I my Savior’s love will not spurn.

I must grow to learn and finally see,
I must follow the path the path that will be.
The one true voice that must straightway lead,
My floundering soul away from the greed.

Into the path that only he does keep,
To awaken my soul from this mortal sleep.
And stand at the door, where he beckons me,
I’ll open my heart and be set free.

Finding in him true light and love,
Will lead me back to my home above.
Through the door of his own mercy and grace.
I’ll finally behold my Savior’s face.

One thought on “Come Unto Christ

  1. I wrote this poem more than 20 years ago and believe it shows well the progression of my poetry as I have come to rely more fully upon the spirit to guide me me as i write. This is one of my favorite “Old” poems that has meant a great deal to me as I have worked diligently to come unto Christ. It is after all a life-long pursuit to come unto Christ…
